The meaning of "Two-spirit"
Indigenous peoples all over the world have their own unique relationships to identity, gender, sexuality and to the natural world. Many of these fluid identities or ways of being have been harmed through colonization. Two-Spirit, LGBTQQIA+ communities have been working hard to advocate for inclusivity, accessibility and safety around different Two-Spirit identities, and understandings of gender expression. Two-spirit is a term used by many Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island to describe people who walk in between worlds, who travel within their ways of expressing identity and who break the colonial gender norms.
