Nordlys Seminar: The battle for minerals
Nussir ASA has gained operation license and discharge permit for a copper mine with seafill in Repparfjorden. The mining industry will have great consequences for the reindeer herding and fjord fishing in the area. Both environmentalists and the Sámi Parliament have protested, while the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries believes that the mining will not prevent reindeer herding. At the same time, there are several other intrusions in Sámi areas: wind industrial areas, development of power lines, roads and railways.
Is there a moral responsibility to open up for mining? Where does that responsibility start and where does Norway´s responsibility for Indigenous Peoples' rights end?
Panel:
- Frank Bakke-Jensen, Høyre
- Silje Karine Muotka, Sametingsråd
- Tore Wæraas, NHO Arktis
- Silje Lundberg, Naturvernforbundet
The panel debate is arranged by Nordlys Magazine and Riddu Riđđu.
