Making whole the broken lives

Seminar

As an extension of the art exhibition, we invite you to a conversation on 'Alnayah', Qalaherriaq and the piecing together of fragments in the colonial archive. We’ve chosen to call this conversation “Making whole the broken lives”.

This conversation picks up on two stories from colonial archives that are portrayed in the exhibition: One concerning the young Inughuit hunter Qalaherriaq, who in 1850 was abducted from his home in the north west of Kalaallit Nunaat, the other story being about “Alnayah”, who also was an Inughuag. Like Qalaherriaq, Alnayah had her life traumatized by western men who came to explore the Arctic.

What do we know about Qalaherrag, Alnayah and their lives? What sources are there and where do we find them? Why do their stories matter, and what does it mean to speak about them, converse with them or use them today?

Participants in the conversation are Axl Ingemann-Jeremiassen and Ingeborg Høvik, who for years have been amassing pieces and connecting the dots of these stories. They are joined by Bolatta Silis-Høegh. She is a visual artist from Kalaallit Nunaat and Latvia. For the exhibition she has created two artworks Akisuarpalaaq (the mountains heard her voice) and Pitit – Yours) i the stories about Alnayah an Qalaherriaq.
