Old and new warriors meet

Seminar
Literature

In collaboration with Mun dajan – Foreninga samiske forfattere, we invite to a conversation between:

Niillas A. Somby (Somban Áillu Niillas) and Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen.

Old and new warriors meet to talk about Sami activism, the fight for Sami rights and the slow pace of reconciliation. Both have recently published important books. Niillas A. Somby published the book I ulvens time (In the hour of the wolf) in 2016, in Norwegian in 2022. Ella Marie Hætta's book That’s why you need to know I am Sami came out the year before, in 2021.

Somby is the activist who sacrificed a lot, including a hand during the Alta demonstrations 43 years ago. Hætta is the activist who gave voice and power to the Fosen demonstrations last year.

The wolf is a mythical animal in Sami culture, it has powerful yoiks associated with it. While one uses the word in the book title, the other yoiked the wolf when Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland appeared in the Norwegian parliament’s Vandrehall.

Where does the battle for water and land stand in Sápmi today? What is at stake?

Is there a climate for reconciliation in Norway?

Moderator: Marit Anne Hauan.

Language: Norwegian.
