Language Divides Sámi Grand Prix

Seminar

This spring’s edition of the Sámi Grand Prix sparked an intense debate when a song with Norwegian lyrics was performed. Should SGP allow songs in Norwegian, or is the debate ultimately about who is considered Sámi enough? Are we facing a legitimate need to protect the few Sámi-language arenas we have, or would strict language requirements exclude those who have lost their language as a result of the Norwegianization policies?

For some, the inclusion of Scandinavian languages is seen as diluting one of the most important platforms for the preservation and visibility of Sámi languages. For others, exclusion feels painful and unfair at a time when many are struggling to reclaim an identity that was taken from them.

Riddu Riđđu invites you to an open and informed panel discussion where we move the debate out of the comment sections and onto the stage.
