Jeremy Dutcher

Concert
Northern people of the year

Canadian Jeremy Dutcher is a tenor, composer and activist who uses every opportunity to use his Wolastoq First Nation roots in his music, and he creates music that you have hardly heard before. Dutchers debutalum "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa"; which he won both Polar Music prize and Juno award for, has 110 years old recordings from his community.

Jeremy is concerned with the importance of preserving his language. "I do this work because now only 100 people speak Wolastoqey. It is essential that we use our language and pass it on to the next generation. If you lose your native language you will lose a completely distinct way of experiencing the world."
