Tittel: Gaskačázis 

Gaskačázis is a collaborative project between composer and musician Markus Thonhaugen (iDJa) and visual artist Eili Bråstad. The audience is invited on a meditative journey through a northern landscape of organic and technological expression - where sound and images merge. 

The project explores the intersection between nature, indigenous culture and modern technology. Recordings have been made with tools such as contact microphones and a microscope, which gives the audiences insight into normally invisible and inaudible spaces. 

The nature in Sápmi is facing great challenges related to human intervention, leaving irreversible transformations to the landscape and its ecosystems. The project aims to create reflection on the world in change. 

Sound and visuals react to each other in real time, creating an evolving environment that emphasizes presence, awareness, and sensitivity to change. The joik is central and improvised live in response to the emerging sound and visuals, and to the state of the audience. 

The project is supported by the Sámi Parliament in Norway, Arts Council Norway and Nordland County Council. 

About the artists:  

Markus Johnsen Thonhaugen (iDJa) is a Sámi electronic musician, composer, and sound artist based in Bodø, Northern Norway. He studied electronic music and spatial sound at Catalyst Institute in Berlin. His work combines field recordings, joik, and electronic production, exploring Sámi culture, identity, and environmental themes. 

Eili Bråstad is a visual artist from Sápmi, based in Oslo. She works primarily with film, video art and live visuals, often in collaboration with musicians and performing artists. Her practice draws on her Kvääni and Sámi background, combining it with an experimental aesthetic and a queer perspective on time, identity, and movement. Bråstad holds BA in Moving Images and an MA in Fine Arts.
