Commissioned concert: Juxta Paganos
JUXTA PAGANOS was the term used by the Church to describe the outer edge of Christianity's reach, translated from Latin meaning "close to the pagans". In a 1308 decree, the Vatican described the church in Tromsø with these exact words, and by doing so, a line was drawn in the earth.
The term “juxta paganos” marked the frontier where Western religious power met the Indigenous world. It became the northernmost outpost in a centuries-long campaign to assimilate, pacify, and erase the Sámi population. Across the globe, the same forces of colonial power and missionary zeal sought to silence indigenous peoples by banning their languages, and criminalizing their vocal traditions and storytelling.
But the spirit refused to bend.
With this collaborative concert, we gather to celebrate the unyielding vocal traditions of the Sámi, Inuit, and Mongolian peoples. Through artists who reclaim, carry, and evolve these ancient techniques, we honor the stories that could not be erased.
The duo Hildá Länsman & Tuomas Norvio (luohti, electronics) weaves the raw power of master vocalists Nasaa Ganbold (Khöömei) and Charlotte Qamaniq & Cynthia Pitsiulak (Katajjaq) into their dramatic, pulsing electronic soundscape. This collaboration carves out a rare sonic space where past meets present and music merges with machine - a boundary-pushing celebration of tradition, driven forward by the resilient spirit of indigenous storytelling.
Join us on the outer edge.
