Northern people of the Year is Kildin & Skolt Sámi
We Sámi are one people living in four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. For the Riddu Riđđu Festival it is important to highlight the variations and the community in Sápmi. This year we have chosen to focus on the cultural expressions of Kildin and Skolt Sámi through the program Northern People of the Year. We will meet several artists and culture carriers who work with Sámi culture, crafts, music and politics in eastern Sámi areas. All of them important voices in the story of Sápmi and our common Sámi cultural heritage.
Kildin Sámi has their historical sites in the heart of the Kola Peninsula, while Skolt Sámi today live in Russia, Finland and Norway. Leu'dd/Luv´vvt is a Kildin and Skolt Sámi song and storytelling tradition that is continued between the generations. Leu'dd/Lu´vvt will be an important part of the program at Riddu Riđđu this year, and the performers will give the audience a chance to get acquainted with Kildin and Skolt Sámi, and the historical events that these songs tell about.
