Sofia Jannok and Sondre Justad to play at Riddu Riđđu

The Riddu Riđđu festival celebrates 25 years this summer. We promise that the anniversary will be celebration properly and initiate the line-up with a Sami “snow lioness” and a North-Norwegian wonderboy!

Sofia Jannok has established herself as one of Sápmis biggest artists. She has revitalized the traditional music tradition based around yoik by combining a modern soundscape. By mixing electronica, jazz and folk music with her heartfelt yoik, she paints the most beautiful arctic landscapes with her music. This spring she´ll release a new album that is said to offer vulnerability, raw power and a burning passion for Sápmi and it´s people. Her single Snölejoninna (snow lioness) was released on Sami peoples day this February, and gave her fans a taste of the new Jannok to come.

Jannok says this about playing the festival; ” I adore Riddu Riđđu! Both me and the band consider it the highlight of the summer. That I risk missing out on the reindeer calf season at home, shows how much I appreciate the festival”

Sondre Justad entered the norwegian music industry with a boom the summer of 2013 when he released the singel «Nu har du mæ(Now you´ve got me)». Since then it has been a steady rise to stardom for the young musician from Lofoten. Sold out concerts and hundreds of hours of radio time shows that Justad has established himself as a pop artists to recon with in the future. The pop comet is known for his open hearted north-Norwegian lyrics and recently released the album “Riv i hjertet” (ripping heart) that received good reviews.

Sondre Justads is excited to play Riddu Riđđu, and reveals an interest in Sami culture: «Incredibly proud to be playing Riddu! I´ve always been fascinated by the Sami culture, and even got in touch with Frode Fjellheim in 2008 because I wanted to learn how to yoik. We never managed to find time, but hopefully some day! Festival director Karoline Trollvik says Sondre Justad delivers joyfull and energetic pop music. «It´s kind of like how Riddu Riđđu feels right now; like a fit 25- year old full of energy and enthusiasm!»

Both artists has also shown a political engagement, and that fits the festival perfectly. Jannok advocates for indigenous rights and are one of many activists fighting against mines in the Sámi areas in Northern-Sweden. Justad has on several occasions argued against the oil drilling along the coast of Northern-Norway. He says; «it is crazy to mess with something with such high risks!» Festival director Karoline Trollvik says; “We are grateful that these young artists use their voice to speak up and create awareness around these issues that we know are a real risk to the traditional livelihood of indigenous people around the world”.

The ticket sale opens today, with a Christmas campaign with a reduced price on the festival pass that lasts until 31.12.15. –The Christmas campaign and these two bookings are one of the best Christmas gifts we could give our audience, says Trollvik. Buy tickets HERE
